IN FOCUS

  • There's more to Alibaba's earnings report
  • How China's AI players do more with less

Hello reader,

Vibe coding is a relatively new concept. Vibe investing? That's how it's been done forever.

Stock market investing, specifically, is heavily influenced by vibes and by how investors feel about something, rather than cold, hard data. Today's featured story is a prime example of why a stock ticker's movements may not have a lot to do with company performance.

In this article, guest writer Jacob Cooke, co-founder and CEO of WPIC Marketing + Technologies, takes a closer look at Alibaba's latest earnings results. Profit fell sharply while capital expenditures surged - combined, they put a dent in the Chinese firm's value. But Cooke says that misses the point.

He then outlines how Alibaba's performance shows how it is positioning itself to capture large swathes of China's AI demand over the next few years. The secret? A full-stack approach.

Read on to find out more.

Also today, we dig into the archives to explore how Chinese AI firms do more with less capital than their US rivals.

TOP STORY

Alibaba's AI capex spike isn't the story investors think

In AI, full stack means playing in every layer of the supply chain, including physical infrastructure like chips, cloud renting out compute to the models themselves, and apps that people actually use.

It's still unclear which part of that supply chain will capture the most value, and Cooke argues that Alibaba's investments up and down the board mean it stands to benefit from growing demand across every layer.

HOW AI IS REWRITING THE TRAVEL JOURNEY

In conversation with the co-founder and CEO of Klook

The travel journey is changing. Social media sparks discovery, AI accelerates the decision, and booking increasingly happens without ever leaving the platform.

With only a few days to go until the Tech in Asia Conference, Klook co-founder and CEO Ethan Lin joins us to unpack how AI and social commerce are collapsing the distance between inspiration and action. With 30,000+ creators across 88 markets, Klook sits at the center of this shift, turning the content that people discover in their feeds into experiences they can book.

Ethan will share what this means for the future of travel, from how tourists discover where to go to how AI is changing the path to purchase.

Join us to see how AI and social commerce are reshaping the journey from discovery to booking.

How China's AI surge defies US spending power

Speaking of AI in China, this March 2026 article explains how Chinese AI labs have been closing the gap with their US counterparts, despite having less to spend on infrastructure.

The article, written by telecom industry expert Matt Walker, argues that capital efficiency, not just raw spend, may end up mattering more in the AI race. Looking at how Huawei maintained its global telecom dominance despite supply restrictions, Walker suggests today's chip curbs on China's AI industry may prove similarly futile.

POWERING AI IN ASIA AND BEYOND

In partnership withCyberport

The next step in AI innovation will require collaboration between the private and public sectors. That's what Cyberport, Hong Kong's flagship digital tech and AI accelerator, is doing.

It's spearheading Hong Kong's AI strategy through the development of Cyberport 5, an expansion of its existing campus that features advanced infrastructure, including a data center and high-speed connectivity. The accelerator is also establishing the territory's first and largest Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Centre (AISC), providing the significant resources required to boost R&D.

It offers a US$385 million subsidy scheme, expert consultancy services, and is building connections with global innovation hubs and educational institutions all around the world, positioning Hong Kong as a strategic "springboard" for AI firms to scale and list on global markets.
