IN FOCUS

  • SGX's CEO thinks it is still misunderstood
  • Meet the AI startups arming SMEs with everyday tools
  • Shein is finally ready for IPO

Hello reader,

It's clear that when startups in Southeast Asia flirt with the idea of going public, they typically look to either New York or Singapore.

Choosing the former exudes bravado, a declaration that the company is big enough to play with the global heavyweights. Opting for the latter, I've found, signals trust: a belief that the local market understands and values what the firm does.

However, the fact that startups in the region still name the US as a destination for their public debuts invites reflection on the state of Southeast Asia's exchanges. Take the Singapore Exchange (SGX), for example.

Our first top story today details how SGX's daily average value recently hit an 18-year high of US$1.4 billion. Over the past decade, the exchange has built a name as a clearinghouse for the world's largest investment banks.

That business has become a stable revenue-generating engine, hitting US$1.2 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2026. It shows that despite the lack of a headline-grabbing IPO, SGX manages to draw investors in.

Quiet, behind-the-scenes work is also powering the AI startups mentioned in our other featured premium. Across Asia, more startups are building agents that handle tedious office tasks for SMEs. For them, low-cost open-source models are often good enough to create and run these agents, no frontier models required.

TOP STORIES

1️⃣ SGX's CEO says it doesn't need a unicorn to win

Loh Boon Chye, CEO of SGX, is not bothered by the lack of huge IPOs in the exchange. He believes SGX's regular equity listings are enough to drive the investment volume the market requires. Case in point: It has 50 companies in its IPO pipeline, up from last year's 30.

2️⃣ SMEs want AI too, but not the kind Big Tech is selling

AI startups are building low-cost open models like DeepSeek and Kimi to create AI agents that can accomplish a wide range of tasks an SME typically performs. It's a clear departure from the "tokenmaxxing" trend seen in enterprises and shows the wide market Big Tech is yet to serve.

Shein tried to shed China. Its IPO now hinges on embracing it

The fast-fashion retailer is looking to raise up to US$1.7 billion for its IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This feat is years in the making. Shein initially set its sights on going public in London but ultimately had to list somewhere Chinese regulators would accept.

In this piece released in March, guest author Ivy Yang details why the company had to pull back from its "China-shedding" strategy.

1️⃣ Shein launches Hong Kong IPO to raise up to $1.8b

The fashion brand, which is expected to begin trading in September, is vying for a US$27 billion valuation for the IPO. That's a huge discount from Shein's earlier targets of US$98.2 billion (2022) and US$64 billion (2024).

2️⃣ Hugging Face explores sale at $13b valuation

The AI platform is reportedly working with a bank to gauge interest from potential buyers, but no deal has been reached. This move comes weeks after OpenAI admitted that one of its unreleased models accidentally hacked Hugging Face.

3️⃣ Indonesia's Vidio aims to release 6 AI-generated titles in 2027

In February, the streaming platform launched its first AI-generated animation series, Keluarga Somat, which got 20 brand sponsorships and turned a profit, according to chief product officer Hadikusuma Wahab. Vidio is also looking into producing AI-generated microdramas and even soap operas.

4️⃣ Chocolate Finance to launch business accounts

The Singapore-based cash management platform says its business account product will allow companies to earn 1.5% per year on their first S$300,000 (US$236,000), with withdrawals available anytime. It's the first time Chocolate Finance is expanding its product portfolio since launching as a consumer-focused cash management platform in 2024.

5️⃣ Alibaba shares drop 10% after $10.2b share placement

The tech giant is set to issue 710 million new shares at US$14 each, a discount from the US$16 closing price of its stock on August 21. The fresh capital will help the firm fund its investment in cloud computing and AI infrastructure over the next three years.

FROM SUPPORT TO STRATEGY

In partnership withConcentrix

Evolution is necessary for growth, and that's something global tech firm Concentrix has taken to heart. In an increasingly AI-centric world, the company has moved beyond customer support to become a strategic partner for enterprise-wide digital transformation.

To help businesses navigate Southeast Asia's fragmented markets, Concentrix integrates generative AI (genAI), cloud platforms, and advanced analytics into the core operations of the companies it works with.

The impact so far has been significant: In Vietnam, a genAI voice bot reduced operational errors by 90% for a pharma company. In Malaysia, meanwhile, an automated onboarding platform cut manual effort by up to 90% for a consumer goods firm.
